Ron Ely, the actor who played Tarzan in the 1960s TV series, has died at age 86.
His daughter, Kirsten Casale Ely, confirmed that he died on Sept. 29 at his home in Los Alamos, California.
Ely was known for portraying Tarzan in the NBC series, following in the footsteps of Johnny Weismuller.
His daughter described him as a "positive influence" who had a "magical" impact on people.
In 2019, Ely made headlines again when his wife, Valerie, was stabbed to death by their son, Cameron.
Police later shot and killed Cameron.
Ely challenged the police's justification for the shooting.
Ely met Valerie when hosting the Miss America pageant.
They married in 1984 and had three children.
Ely retired from acting in 2001 to focus on his family. In 2014, he briefly returned for a TV movie, "Expecting Amish."
In the Tarzan series, Ely played an educated version of the character who left civilization for the jungle.
He performed many of his stunts and worked closely with wild animals.
Ely also played Doc Savage in 1975 and wrote two mystery novels in the 1990s.
He was born in Hereford, Texas, and raised in Amarillo.
His daughters, Kirsten and Kaitlin Ely Sweet, survive him.
