Benton High School Launches Exciting New Esports Program

Benton High School’s new Esports program offers students an exciting way to compete, build skills, and explore college opportunities. Learn more about this groundbreaking initiative.

Benton High School has officially entered the thrilling world of Electronic Sports (Esports) by launching its competitive gaming team.

Although Benton is the last of the three high schools in the St. Joseph School District (SJSD) to embrace Esports, the excitement is undeniable as students and coaches dive headfirst into this cutting-edge venture.

“We are ecstatic. This is brand spanking new for everybody, and obviously for Benton too. The kids could not be more excited; they are bouncing off the walls for this,” shared Head Coach Beth Hernandez-Rice, her enthusiasm matching the energy of her students.

For many students, launching the Esports team is a dream come true.

Colt Mehesan, one of the team’s first members, could not hide his excitement.

“It is amazing. It feels cool as heck. I never thought I would be part of an Esports team or involved in anything like this,” he said, grinning from ear to ear.

Opening Doors for Everyone

Esports is not just about gaming—it is about opportunity.

Benton’s decision to introduce a gaming program has opened up new avenues for students who may not have found their place in traditional sports.

It is a game-changer, especially for those who prefer a different competition.

“It is very nice because many people just do not want to be physical,” explained Tnias Palner, a proud Esports team member.

“This is perfect for those not into contact sports or want something different. You can play games with your friends, which is why this is a big step for Benton.”

Beyond providing a fun and inclusive space for students, Esports is proving to be a serious opportunity.

Coach Hernandez-Rice is quick to highlight the potential benefits for the students.

“These kids have been told they could be scouted for college. While we want to keep things fun, we also emphasize the importance of this opportunity. Gaming can lead to scholarships and even professional careers if they stay dedicated,” she said.

The Rise of Esports in Schools

What Benton is doing is not just a local phenomenon. Schools nationwide embrace Esports to engage students, build teamwork, and teach valuable skills like strategic thinking and technological literacy.

For students who might not have felt connected to other school activities, Esports offers a new way to shine.

“It is not just about the games,” said Coach Hernandez-Rice.

“It is about the discipline, the camaraderie, and the possibilities. These kids are learning to work as a team, think critically, and handle high-pressure situations while doing something they genuinely love.”

What is Next for Benton’s Esports Team?

As Benton’s Esports program gets underway, the team focuses on building their skills, understanding the competitive gaming landscape, and preparing for future competitions.

With so much enthusiasm and talent already on display, it is clear that the program has a bright future.

The introduction of Esports at Benton High School is not just a milestone—it is a launchpad.

Whether students want to compete, connect, or carve out a new path to college and beyond, Benton’s Esports program gives them the tools and support to dream big.

“This is just the beginning,” said Coach Hernandez-Rice.

“We are excited to see where this journey takes us.”
