A recent study conducted by researchers at Brock University and the University of Calgary has upended conventional views on family dynamics by shedding light on the unique personality traits of middle children.
Contrary to the stereotype of being overlooked or forgotten, middle children have emerged as paragons of honesty, cooperation, and agreeableness.
The research, led by psychology professors Dr. Michael Ashton and Dr. Kibeom Lee, examined over 700,000 individuals from Canada, the US, Australia, and the UK.
The participants, spanning diverse age groups and family structures, were assessed using a well-established personality questionnaire.
The findings are striking: middle children consistently outperformed their siblings and even only children in traits such as agreeableness and honest humility.
Birth Order and Personality Traits
The study evaluated six personality dimensions: agreeableness, openness to experience, honest humility, extraversion, conscientiousness, and emotionality.
Middle children scored exceptionally high in traits linked to integrity and collaboration, such as honest humility, which is associated with rule-following, fairness, and the avoidance of manipulative behavior.
On the other hand, eldest children and only children tended to excel in intellectual curiosity, a trait often linked to early exposure to adult interactions and responsibilities.
In the second phase of the research, which included 77,000 participants, the results further revealed that these traits in middle children became more pronounced in more prominent families.
The researchers speculate that the necessity to navigate complex sibling dynamics fosters a greater capacity for compromise and cooperation in middle children.

While the findings are compelling, they reignite a long-standing debate in psychology regarding the influence of birth order on personality.
