The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency has begun supplying arms and limited military support to Iranian Kurdish opposition factions, according to multiple reports citing American and Kurdish officials.

The move is part of a broader strategy to create internal pressure on Iran’s government amid ongoing regional tensions.

The program, which intensified in recent weeks, involves groups such as the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI) and the Free Life Party of Kurdistan (PJAK).

These factions, operating primarily from bases in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, represent Iran’s Kurdish population of approximately 10 million.

President Donald Trump personally spoke by telephone on Tuesday with Mustafa Hijri, president of the KDPI, to discuss the situation, sources familiar with the call told CNN and Reuters.

Kurdish leaders have requested additional U.S. backing, including potential logistical support for cross-border operations.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declined to comment on specific operational details but confirmed that the administration is engaging with partners in northern Iraq.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that U.S. policy focuses on supporting forces opposed to the current Iranian regime.

Iranian officials have strongly condemned the reported assistance, describing it as foreign interference aimed at destabilising the country.

Tehran has responded by increasing deployments of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in western border provinces and conducting drone strikes on suspected Kurdish positions in Iraq.

The development comes as the U.S.-Israel campaign against Iran continues.

With the situation in Syria stabilised under new leadership, Washington is reportedly seeking to exploit ethnic divisions inside Iran.
